You can be converted to a career or career conditional appointment after two years of successful performance. You can also be hired to fill temporary (not to exceed 1 year) or term (more than 1 year but not to exceed 4 years) positions in which case you will not be converted to career or career conditional after 2 years of service

30% or More Disable Veteran Hiring Authority

The 30% or More Disabled Veteran Authority allows any Veteran with a 30% or more service-connected disability to be hired without competition for any position for which the Veteran qualifies. Appointment can be made at any grade level. Initial appointments are time-limited, but must last more than 60 days; however, the Agency may noncompetitively convert you to a permanent status at any time during the time-limited appointment

Schedule A Appointing Authority

Though not specifically for veterans, for people with certain disabilities, this is an excepted authority that agencies can use to appoint eligible veterans who have a psychological, intellectual, or severe physical disability. Agencies can use this authority, to appoint an eligible veteran at any grade level and for any job (time-limited or permanent) for which they qualify. After 2 years of satisfactory service, the agency may convert the veteran, without competition, to the competitive service.
